There isn't really a proper way, it's whatever way works best for you and you like best.
Personally, I like to use a medium shade on my lid, a dark shade in the crease, and a light shade as a highlight. But again, it's up to you :)

Apply a light shade to your eyelid (the part where you can feel your eyeball), then a darker shade of the same colour to the crease and blend (where you can feel between the bone and your eyeball), then a really, really light shade right under the eyebrow.
